How To Choose The Best Ping Pong Table For You ?
Before starting your research, there are a few elements that you need to understand and questions that you need to answer. It’s the first step of making an informed decision.
This step is essential because it will make the decision process that comes later a lot easier. So, I’d recommend spending some time on it. This way you make sure you won’t have any regrets later.
You can start by watching this video on your right that will give you a quick explanation of the main things to consider when buying a ping pong table.
After that, you can read through our detailed information below.
The Difference Between Indoor And Outdoor Table Tennis Tables
Obviously, an indoor ping pong table is meant to be mainly set inside the building while outdoor tables are used in the open air.
The main difference between the two is that outdoor table tennis tables have weatherproof playing surfaces.
These tables are resistant to the changes that may occur to temperature and humidity.
This way you won’t worry about the warping or cracking of the material of the table.
However, you should be aware of the fact that an indoor table is more likely to have a better bounce performance than an outdoor table of the same price range.
Apparently, the weatherproof material affects the playing quality especially in the case of cheap outdoor tables.
While indoor tables delivers better playing experiences and come with better design, outdoor tables are generally heavier, more resilient and can last for decades.
Bottom line, if you’re willing to play outdoors or leaving the table uncovered for long periods in a place with high humidity (garage or basement), then you should probably get an outdoor table. Otherwise, your indoor table will be ruined rapidly and you’ll waste all of your money.
|Indoor Tables||Outdoor Tables|
|Bouncing quality||Netter bounce quality||Less uniform bounce|
|Overall playing performance||At the same price range, indoor tables deliver a better playing performance|
|Cost||Generally, outdoor tables are more expensive because of the heavy materiel they're built with.|
|Durability||Usually, outdoor tables can last much longer than indoor tables.|
What’s Your purpose of Purchasing a Ping Pong Table ?
Are you willing to use this table for training purposes so that you can participate in some ping pong competitions ?
In this case, it’s better to get a reliable table that is at least in the range of 500-1000 dollars. An over 1000$ table would be perfect.
If wanna be a pro than there’s no room for you to compensate over quality.
However, if you’re just wanna start a small recreation center in your house to have fun with family and friends, then you can for sure go for less expensive tables if your budget is limited.
However, I strongly suggest to get an over 500$ table if you’re willing to use that table on a daily basis.
If you’re buying the table to place it in a common work space or in a recreational facility, then it’s better to get a solid table that can survive the extensive usage.
How Much Space Do You Have/Need ?
One of the main things to consider is where you’re going to put your ping pong table. The size of your playing area depends on the size of your table. Table tennis tables don’t all have the exact same dimensions.
However, the regulation size of a ping pong table is 9 x 5 feet (2.74m x 1.5m).
For a comfortable play, you should have at least a surface of 18 feet (5.5 m) long and 10 feet (3 m) wide in order to have an excellent playing experience.
But, if you intend to use the table for training purposes, then you’ll need more space. Let’s say 39 x 19 feet (12m x 6m) as they use at national level tournaments would be ideal.
So, make sure you measure the space where you intend to place your table and compare it with the size dimensions of the table that you wanna purchase.
What’s Your Budget ?
In other words, how much you’re willing to spend on a ping pong table ?
There is a wide range of prices for table tennis tables that go from a few hundreds dollars to thousands of dollars for premium tables.
So, there’s a lot of options when it comes to pricing. It just depends on your financial capacity and your degree of experience.
If you’re willing to use the table for recreational purposes with friends on the weekends, then I’d certainly recommend to get an average table especially if your new to the ping pong game.
Personally, I don’t think spending a thousands dollars on something you’ll only use in the weekends is a good idea.
But, if you intend to use the table to host some competitions or you wanna use it for daily practice, I’d recommend a premium table that will endure the daily intense play.
Table Tennis Table Features To Consider When Buying
This is where most people get lost. They think that all ping pong tables are similar.
For most people, if the table looks nice and they can afford it, then they would buy it. That’s a very common mistake.
Unfortunately, things are a little bit more complicated than that. If you really wanna get a “good” table tennis table, then you may need to spend more time on your decision.
Luckily for you, you stumbled upon this guide that will save you a lot of time.
Now, let’s go through some of the essential elements that you need to pay attention to when deciding which table to purchase.
A. Table Dimensions
It’s important to know what are the dimensions of the table. There’s three type of dimensions you may read on the product description: playing dimension, storage dimensions and playback dimensions (if the table supports playback mode).
Playing dimensions refer to the space you need in order to play comfortably. Storage dimensions mean the space you’ll need to store the table after you finish playing. Playback dimensions are the space the table takes when putting it on playback mode.
These dimensions are usually expressed this way: 69″ W x 28″ D x 64″ H with W for width, D for depth (length) and H for height.
B. Table Surface Thickness
One of the key factors of a good ping pong table is its thickness. Table surface thickness is the main factor of bounce performance alongside with the used material.
What I usually recommend is not to get any table that has a thickness less than 5/8″ (15.875 mm). The reason is that these tables don’t provide a consistent bounce which is awful.
In addition, tables with a thickness that is higher than 7/8″ (22.23 mm) are just perfect for clubs and tournaments.
Having a strong frame in the inside table is important. The frame alongside with legs are what keeps your table holding on. They are the main factors of a stable table that can endure years of intense play.
Most table tennis tables have both legs and wheels. Legs are made to maintain the table steady while playing while wheels are used to move the table around.
The important thing here is to check the diameter of the legs and its material (steel is preferable). Also, the table needs to have locked wheels to keep the table stable. And let’s not forget that the frame is preferable to be made also made with steel.
Some tables have leg levelers that can be adjusted easily to maintain an even level when playing on uneven surface.
Stationary tables are those tables who have no wheels. They are not meant to be moved regularly. So, if you have a dedicated place for your table, I’d recommend getting a stationary table because they’re sturdier and more durable.
However, if you don’t have a lot of space then a fold-up or roll-away model is your way to go. Just make sure you get a table that can be folded easily within minutes.
D. Assembling Process
Table tennis tables aren’t delivered ready to use. You still have to assemble them. That’s why you have to pay attention to how difficult or time-consuming is the assembling process of any given table before purchasing it.
Nowadays, there are many brands (Stiga for example) that offer pre-assembled tables that can be done within 10-30 mins max. But, there’s still some tables that are overly complicated to assemble. Sometimes, the instructions book is hard to follow which will take your whole day to assemble the table.
Even worse, if the table was hard to assemble you may put the table incorrectly which may affect your playing experience or get somebody injured.
E. Playback Option
Usually, most fold-up models have a playback option that allows you to play solo.
If you’d like to play alone and challenge yourself from one time to another, you should make sure that the table you’re buying has a playback option.
F. Additional Accessories
Some tables offer more fun features to make your experience more convenient. The most common features are ball storage and abacus scorer.
Ball storage is a dedicated place that is attached to your table and where you can put your balls. It allows you to have a closer access to the balls so they won’t get lost or anything.
Abacus scorer is a scoring unit that makes it easier to track of points. You don’t have to keep remembering what the score is. They’re usually made of wood and are attached to your table.
